[Wasteful? He's heard many things about the use of magic, but never that it's wasteful. The expenditure of will comes back quickly enough, and the kickbacks from repeated use are more than worth it. Perhaps these people do not have such benefits to repeated spell use? Or perhaps they simply do not have a will so easily replenished... he cocks his head, peering out at her curiously. The way she describes the use of time magic almost makes him laugh, it sounds so quaint... but the lore behind it is curious. He extends a hand, gesturing as he responds.

"Wasteful? It is a simple enough spell. Protection and contact damage at close quarters are little to be scoffed at. You offered flame, and so I deepened the amount present." In a way that wasn't Megaflare, which would have probably taken her as well as the monster. Not the way to create a first impression on a new world. "Make no mistake, no man is exempt from the laws of Time. Even the mightiest masters must take heed and fall into sway."

[At last, someone who knew much of magick yet was not related to her by blood, one of her many guild leaders, or a sworn enemy. A very faint twitch at the corner of her lips may have hinted a bit of curiosity and amusement she would rather had not, yet indeed - Time was not kind to all.

Though perhaps she would be grateful Megaflare was not used - there were enough locals who suffered PTSD from when Bahamut broke out from its prison and cast it on many family members...]

Indeed... though I would be a fool not to notice your aether suddenly flow at an increased rate. [Much like her own Aetherflow, in a sense. Though she cannot help but mimic the gesture as hew own curiosity was piqued further.] Though pray forgive my simple curiosity....My fellow mages only spake of Umbral Ice regaining aetheric energies so quickly, whereas Astral Fire grants more strength.

[It was basic thaumaturgy! ...and someone just gained a free lesson.]

in my dreams, I am the derp.. it's me.

Aether..? [The word rolls off his tongue grandly. A word that implies power... is that the word they use to describe the will that empowers magic? But then again, she could sense the change in his speed through that 'aether', where most would not be able to tell the change outside of watching him move. Curiouser and curiouser.

He absorbs the terminology hungrily, excited to learn something so new and potentially different... nodding slightly as he considers.]

The shadows provide spirit, and the stars provide strength. Fitting, in a way... but a curious dichotomy. [Like light and darkness, but with less stigma.] And ice and fire... so our collective pooling of flame made our combined magic stronger? Or does your beast follow a different rule?

[He's not as adept a mage as he will be in the future, but he still is passable enough at magical theory to keep up in basic conversation.
summonthewill: (nocturne ♈ have no fear)

no no, I am the derp. My belated tags prove it.

You are able to harness magical prowess yet do not rea-?

[She then gives pause to thought, and then smirks. Ah, the unknown hooded man indeed just revealed what she had suspected: an outsider, likely from another world. How intriguing, even as she seems to study him further.]

My "beast", as you call my primal-egi, indeed follows similar rules. Though instead of strengthen, it is a source of flame itself. An aetheric essence of an primal element, one could say.

[The duskwight takes a few steps forward, gesturing in welcome.]

I take it this is your first time in Eorzea, nay, this very world at large?
fons_et_origo: (must... control... fist of death)

the sound you hear is the world order crumbling to dust dammit eorzea

[personal profile] fons_et_origo 2014-02-18 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Her mind is sharp, sharper than he would have thought. Most worlds didn't know about other worlds, with only a handful of travellers capable of bridging the gaps. He'd longed for other worlds himself, but only had the barest glimmer that such a thing was truly possible. That she knows says a great deal about her as well as this place.

He brings himself into a sweeping bow.]

It seems that you have me. I have been to many worlds, but so far in my travels I have yet to see a world like this. Had I time to prepare, perhaps I would not have been so easily outed. You must be a mage of some calibre then, handling a pure form of magic so easily... [the closest thing he could imagine would be calling forth pure molten flame in his hands, which would be rather unpleasant]. An aggregate of element... is it the flame that gives it that shape, or is it your will that has it take that form?
summonthewill: (rally ♈ filled with dreams)

what's that? i can't hear it over the sound of LEARNING AND ADVENTURE 8D

[personal profile] summonthewill 2014-02-18 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
[She bows ever so faintly in turn. Really, she was likely one of the few who would not be downright terrified after the last mage who visited. Granted, said mage only came up to her knee, but the prowess displayed...

Ah, but where were her manners? It was best to keep the mind on the present at times like these.]

Perhaps so, but any keen eye in the shadows would have been likely to have noted your magicks differ from those of this land. [At least, any above level 30- i mean uh.] Now I can't go sharing all of my trades' secrets with every passerby. Already this world has been scarred by the War of the Magi once. I daresay the land still bleeds, as do those too fearful of what they might achieve.

the two words that doomed the worlds

[personal profile] fons_et_origo 2014-02-18 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Had I been more prepared, I would not have been so easily thrust into a situation that required their use.

[The pitfalls of taking detours, really. He'd been hasty in his choices. Then again, he wasn't sure there were worlds where wielding time powers was the norm. He takes a moment to look around to ensure that there's no further threat of attack. After all, that last one came out of seeming nowhere. The wandering creatures are distant enough that it doesn't alarm him, so he stands casually.]

I bear no ill-will to this world or any of its inhabitants, though the word of a stranger bears little weight. Of all the worlds I've been to, this one has a unique system of magic... your aether, as you say. That you could detect my movement through time says much about it.
summonthewill: {girl da fuq is wrong w/ you their murderer's escaping} (gaia ♈ never fear or cry)

doomed is such a strong word, though...

[personal profile] summonthewill 2014-02-18 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
I confess I have been most intrigued by the magic displayed by inter-dimensional travelers...

[It was the exception to her knowledge, never having seen Time magic before. Perhaps it is security in both her power and the fact that Ifrit's rage would be swift were another fiend approach that makes her so relaxed, or perhaps it is but her curiosity.]

How your words ring true, though perhaps it is but experience that lends credibility to your claim.

[In truth, she would know if he did pose a threat to the realm - painfully so, in fact. The Mothercrystal had always been very clear when someone did. Certainly helped when attempting to figure out who to invite to parties, too...]

Aether is more than a system of magick - it is the lifeblood of all things living, and the spirit. The flow of your own seemed to briefly surge beyond mortal limit. 'Tis basic arcanum to study the aetherflow.
fons_et_origo: (creeper in training)

I suppose it's not quite doomed YET... but still...

[personal profile] fons_et_origo 2014-02-18 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
There are many here?

[What kind of world is this that such a thing is commonplace? It's refreshing in a way. A smile edges its way across his face.]

I suppose alone and so easily caught off-guard by such a creature as that is evidence enough. I could barely qualify as a threat to local fauna.

[For a moment the idea of aether seems vaguely familiar, but he dismisses it as perhaps having heard something in a different conversation at another time. There were a lot of those, after all... but it's interesting to think about. Like light and darkness, but not separate entities, and something more essential rather than simply a component. Unity, perhaps? The result of true balance? Or something greater? This was where his knowledge faltered, and it was infuriating.]

I wonder if it does so at any use...

[His eyes wander to a tree, leaves gently rustling in a breeze. He narrows his eyes in concentration, watching the rustling slow down until it's almost comical, the branches making wide arcs and leaves fluttering as though being turned by hand.]
summonthewill: (skeptical ♈ embrace your soul)

Precisely.

[personal profile] summonthewill 2014-02-18 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There have been, yes. Each as intriguing to the commonfolk as the last.

[Of course, it also leads her to wonder what they will say of this nameless stranger. Though considering what he is doing to that tree in slowing its time down-]

Ah, I would not mess with the trees. The forests have been really sensitive these past five years. A single disruption in the aetheric flow-

[...Was that a roar of six treants suddenly being enraged?

That was definitely the sound of six angry treants.]

...and this sort of thing occurs.

[Sigh. Ifrit is not going to be enough for this one. She whips her tome out once more, but only to cast a spell on this stranger - a protective spell of sorts, and one he will likely find very intriguing were a treant to actually strike him.]
fons_et_origo: (reptile the invisiblest)

at least they're off to a good start

[personal profile] fons_et_origo 2014-02-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her warning, and the subsequent roar of the angered forest gives him pause, and he switches gears, releasing the tree he'd been manipulating and focusing on his own personal time... a half-sweep would be more than sufficient to undo the damage, yes... the jerk that accompanies reversing himself is still startling, and he blinks for a moment or two to get his temporal bearings.

The forest is quiet again, thankfully.]

Thank you. I'll keep that in mind for future meddling. I did not mean to cause distress.

[He makes an obeisance with his hands, inclining his head slightly in the general direction of where he'd heard the angry cries. The magic had so permeated the forest that even the trees were sentient... this place was either old or so steeped in magic that anything was possible. He'd been to one world that had been similar, a world where sound had been the key to all, and it had been amazing though he had to be cautious there too. This place was shaping up in a similar fashion. He would have to watch his step.]
summonthewill: (befuddled ♈ velvet blue)

indeed. this will be interesting.

[personal profile] summonthewill 2014-02-20 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
...O Pussiant Althyk...

[This was definitely a strange thing for her, and most fascinating to watch. She could not help but swear by her patron deity as she watches time reverse itself- or at least, the physical actions.]

Ahem. [she coughs behind her hand] I would apologize myself for the Elementals, yet I am no Hearer and cannot commune with them. As it were, they have begun lashing out at event the smallest things that startle or threaten them. ...Though I can say that it is only the case in this wood.

[You have stumbled into one big friggin' world, young one. Yet in this big world with so much work what needs be done, she at least deigns fit to spare another moment.]

While the prime window of opportunity may have already passed, mayhap if I might deign to introduce myself. [She bows again, though not as deep.] Badra Nicot, at your service.

Re: indeed. this will be interesting.

[personal profile] fons_et_origo 2014-02-20 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Patron deities of this wood, then? No wonder they were upset.

[Worlds where gods were manifest was another thing he had yet to encounter. He'd read enough stories about fantastic places where praying to gods had tangible results, but the idea that it was true on some far-off world had been put out of his mind given everything else that had happened.

I feel I am going to enjoy exploring here... ah, a pleasure to meet you, Miss Nicot. Please call me Xehanort. [And, for politeness's sake he pulls down his hood.] Second names are not the custom of my world, unfortunately.

They are the...protectors, more like. Beings who dwell within, yet are not on the same level as the Twelve.

[We don't talk about those that do when they are summoned. Heheh...heh...]

Xehanort... [Last names are trivial, but something... seems a little special about this particular otherworlder. Yes, aside from the time manipulation.] As though I would hold it against you. Though please, call me Badra.

Ah, I see... the Twelve are pantheon, and the Elementals lesser spirits who dwell and guard. Althyk governs your realm of time... and primals encompass the sphere of an element. The stars grant strength, and the shadows refresh.

[He smiles at her, charmingly. He already feels as though he's going to like this place.]

Very well then, Badra. What would you suggest for one who has recently arrived to a world such as this? I would like to immerse myself fully.

[He has a few ideas of what he'd like to do, but hearing what is standard would be a good idea.]
summonthewill: (greeting ♈ silent true)

Very good. You learn quickly.

[There isn't much in the smile she returns, aside from perhaps a bit of pride in becoming a teacher for a brief moment. Though there is something she should say...]

Considering your aptitude for fire and magick, I would head south to the desert city of Ul'dah. You'll find it less likely for your...skills to anger any elementals in that region.

[...Though perhaps a few Amal'jaa wouldn't take too kindly to being rewound once or twice.]

Learning about new worlds is something I enjoy. A desert..? [He's intrigued by the sound of that. There are desert worlds, but he hasn't been to any of them yet. His searches haven't taken him that far.] Perhaps I'll take you up on that. There aren't any desert elementals, then? They prefer the more temperate climes, do they?

[But, enough cheek. There's a more important question to be had.]

How does one find there way to this desert?
